The news of the sudden death of John A. Miles, a former Knox County citizen, but now residing in Sioux city, Ia., came as a great shock to everyone in this community for Sunday morning, Sept. 3rd, he left here for his home in Sioux City, having spent several days on his farm northwest of town, where his son, A.J. Miles resides and where they were shelling corn and he seemed in the best of health and helped haul his corn to Winnetoon markets.

Mr. Miles is numbered with Knox County's prominent, prosperous retired old settlers.

His remains arrived Tuesday afternoon and were taken to the old home northwest of town, where his son resides.

Funeral services were held in Winnetoon MWA Hall conducted by Rev. Cozan, pastor of the Friend church and interment made in the Winnetoon cemetery by the side of his son, who died while in the U.S. Service. The pallbearers were his six sons.

Friends in this community extend our heartfelt sympathy to the widow, children and other relatives in their hours of bereavement.

Heart Disease Believed Cause of Death of Man Prominent In affairs of Helping Hand Mission

Heart disease is believed to have caused the sudden death of John A. Miles 70 years old, at his home, 3517 Sixth Avenue, Monday while writing a letter.

Mr. Miles had been a resident of Sioux City for 15 years and was prominent in the affairs of the Helping Hand Mission.

He was born June 29, in Rednorshire, Wales and came to the United States with his parents when he was about 13 years old. Settling near Ryansville, Wis., the family remained there four years and then moved to a farm in Michigan.

December 23, 1873, Mr. Miles was married to Miss Louisa Muir at Pentwater, Oceana, Michigan, where they resided until 1882, when they moved to a homestead in Knox county, Nebraska. In December 1900, they moved to Sioux City.

Early Monday morning Mr. Miles was engaged in clearing the basement of his home. Shortly before noon he entered the living room, complaining that he was exhausted. However, he began writing a letter to one of his sons.

With a pen clasped in his hand, Mr. Miles was found by his wife a short time later sitting at the table dead. Coroner J.H. Robbins was called and said heart disease caused Mr. Miles' death.

Mr. Miles was the father of eleven children, surviving him besides his wife are six sons, A.J. Miles of Winnetoon, Nebraska, Wm F. of Gregory, S.D., Charles of Ekalaka, Montana, Frank of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, Fred of Holyoke, Colorado and Elmer of Bloomfield and two daughters, Mrs. Hannah Pageler and Mrs. Anna Bouman of Burke, S.D.
