1. Email to Dan Plute, sent Jan 22, 2014
Well Dan you piqued my curiosity about the Plutes in King County and i n Pueblo, Colorado. What I have found is there were four brothers, so ns of Nick/Niko Plute from the village of Dragomlja vas in Slovenia wh o in turn came to the U.S.; one at a time.
First to Arrive:
I. Josef Plut - traveled aboard the SS HAVEL, leaving Bremen, German y and arriving Ellis Island, New York Harbor on 14 Nov 1895. Josef wa s headed to Pueblo. [source: showing on Passenger list found on www.e llisisland.org]. The 1900 US Census finds Josef Plute, still single , a laborer in a smelter; boarding at 1219 S. Santa Fe, the Joseph Cu lig household; most of the 14 or so other male occupants are also fro m Austria and work in a smelter. Anyone of them could have asked Josep h to join them in US. Work was easy to get at the smelter and Puebl o was growing. About 1905, according to birth places of his children , he, along with his wife Rose and the three oldest of his six childre n move to Renton, Washington where he again easily finds work, first a t a saw mill and then as an iron worker at a foundry, we know to be Pa cific Car and Foundry. DOB: 20 Mar 1875 and DOD: 11 Sep 1960. In th e 1910 Census he claims to be a naturalized citizen but I haven't see n any records to confirm this yet.
II. Martin Plute - traveled next. Age: 18; Arriving at Ellis Island, N Y from La Havre, France aboard the SS LA BRETAGNE that arrived on 7 Se p 1901. Passenger #21. States he's traveling to join his brother in Pu eblo, CO at 1219 Santa Fe Ave. [source: www.ellisisland.org] This is t he same address where Josef Plute was boarding in 1900. Doing some ma th we can calculate that Martin was born about 1880. Martin is agai n seen in the 1910 Census, still single, working as a laborer in a sme lter. No other documents have yet to be found for Martin. I have a n idea he died young right there in Pueblo.
III. Next is Lukovic Plut - he appears to have made an encounter wit h fellow traveler, Alois Plut who is 21 and is from another villiage , looks like Mkadisay and is going to his brother's Jakob Plut in Sa n Francisco. Lukovic is passenger #15 on page 25, Alois is listed a s passenger #14, one line above. I don't think Alois and Lukavik ar e related. Now back to Lukavic. Age: 18; Arriving at Ellis Island, N Y from La Havre, France aboard the SS LA CHAMPAGNE on 20 Mar 1906. St ates he's traveling to join his brother Martin Plut in Pueblo, CO wh o lives at 1220 Taylor Ave., Pueblo. [source: www.ellisisland.org ] The naturalization papers found later in Ancestry.com for Jerry Plu te states he arrived aboard the SS LS CHAMPAGNE. Lukovic changes hi s name to Jerry sometime shortly after arriving in the U.S., no docume nts for Lukovic are found, but there are several for Jerry arriving ab oard the CHAMPAGNE in March, 1906. He will eventually move to Washingt on, joining his older brother Joseph, marry Sophia Kubachka, have som e children. He was born on 24 Aug 1887 and died quite young on 20 Se p 1935. His death record says his father was Nick Plute.
IV. The fourth brother is Jakob Plut. Age: 17; Arriving at Ellis Islan d, NY from La Havre, France aboard the SS LA LORRAINE on 21 Sep 1907 . States he's traveling to Pueblo, CO and his nearest relative from w here he is coming from is his Mother Niko Plut. [source: www.ellisis land.org] . I think "Mother" is incorrect, and it should have said fa ther. Jake was born on 12 Jul 1890 and died in Pueblo in October, 197 2. He married a woman named Josephine and together they had three chi ldren. He worked as a roller at the steel foundry until he retires . Guess the northwest bug never bit him. :-)
What do you think? Any more you can add? I have requested obituarie s for Jake and Josephine from the Pueblo Chieftain their local paper . I'll let you know what I find there. Hope to find Renton obituarie s next time I head up north.
This has been a fun quest. Thanks to turning me on to the adventure.
Darlene
