John Wesley Coryell 1922-2009

John Wesley Coryell was called to his maker on June 28, 2009 of natural causes. Wes was born to Ernest and Matilda Coryell on May 19, 1922 in Wilmont, South Dakota as the sixth of nine "preachers kids". The family moved to Meridian, Idaho in 1935. Wes graduated from Meridian High School in 1941 and soon thereafter volunteered for service in the U.S. Navy, spending most of his service time on IE Shima, a small island off of Okinawa. He was honorably discharged with the rate of Electronics Mate 1st Class. On returning home he began undergraduate studies at Boise Junior College where he met and married Doris Denten of Boise. They moved to Boulder, Colo. for two years where Wes graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Doris received her PHT (Putting Hubby Through). They returned to Boise where he began his career with Idaho Power Co. After a short time he was recalled to the Colorado Air National Guard as a Warrant Officer during the Korean War. Upon returning to Idaho, Wes resumed his career with Idaho Power and he and Doris began their family. During his 34 year service with Idaho Power Co. they lived in Pocatello and Twin Falls as well as Boise. Wes retired early at the age of 62 as Manager of Rates and Contracts to travel with his wife after she was diagnosed with cancer. They enjoyed traveling on numerous cruises as well as through Europe and Asia.

Wes was a loving husband and father as well as a vibrant member of his community. He was a member of the Idaho Society of Professional Engineers, Whitney Methodist Church, President of Lyndon House, and Director of the Masonic Temple Association. He was Past Master of Oriental Lodge #60 AF&AM and served the Grand Lodge as District Deputy Grand Master, Grand Orator and Worshipful Grand Chaplain.

Wes spent the past three years living in Virginia with his son Eric and family, and is survived by his three children, eight grand children and two great-grandchildren, two sisters of Meridian and 2 sisters-in-law of Boise, Idaho and Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Doris, parents Ernest and Matilda Coryell, brothers Earl and Melvin, sisters Dorothy Klett, Doris Caulk, Hazel Ruska and Ruth DeWaard.

There will be a brief graveside service at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8th at Morris Hill Cemetary, followed by a reception and celebration of life from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Whitney United Methodist Church, 3315 Overland Road, Boise, ID. Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family, 434-237-9424.
