"Death Comes to Clarence Neff"
"Amputation of Both Legs Yesterday - Boy Made Brave Struggle for Life"
After making a game struggle for life young Clarence Neff finally succumbed at 11:10 o'clock last night at the Old Dominion hospital. Yesterday afternoon the attending physicians as a last resort amputated both of his legs and the lad had not the physique to survive the operation. The left leg was amputated above the knee and the right just below the knee. Both limbs were practically dead below the seat of injury, the blood vessels having been so badly mangled that it was impossible to restore circulation.
Young Neff was fatally injured in the accident which cost the life of Archie Millhollon at the Old Dominion smelter last Monday. Both of the boys' legs were run over by the wheels of an ore car and fro the first the doctors held out but slight hopes for his recovery, although they did everything to save his life. Yesterday afternoon it was decided to amputate his legs, but there was only the faintest of hope that he would survive the operation. He regained consciousness soon after the operation and until death came he was perfectly conscious. Mrs. Stanley, his cousin, was at his bedside until his death. Less than an hour after the death of the boy his brother, Shirley Neff, arrived in the city from Bisbee. He was summoned at the time of the accident, but on account of the telegram tie-up he received the message too late to arrive in time to see his brother alive.
Clarence was born in Globe and had just passed his 15th birthday. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elijah H. Neff, both of whom are dead. He was a bright, affable boy and generally loved by all who knew him. For several months he was employed at the Dominion hotel as bellboy, but an attack of rheumatism compelled him to quit his work and for several months he was sick in bed. His illness left him in frail physical condition and made it impossible for him to withstand the terrible accident which befell him. In addition to his brother, he leaves two sisters, one of whom resides in Hong Kong, China; and the other, Mrs. Oliver Williams, lives at Silver City, N.M.
The remains were taken to the undertaking establishment of F.L. Jones & Son last night to be prepared for burial. No arrangements have as yet been made for the funeral, but it will probably be held tomorrow.
