Born on the cotter's farm Svindalen in Fister parish, Ryfylke, Rogaland, Norway, 4 Dec 1847.
Came to America with his parents in 1861, traveling through Quebec to Fillmore County, where they joined relatives, including his older brother Osmund Johnson (See). Civil War: Age 18.
In Sep 1864, he enlisted at Rochester, Minnesota. Mustered on 4 Oct 1864. Private. Transferred to Company E on 7 Jul 1865.
He was stationed at Chattanooga, Tennessee, helping man heavy guns at a fort. Mustered out 27 Sep 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
Post war: Knud married his widowed sister-in-law, Anna Olsdatter, on 23 Nov 1866, and they left Fillmore County in 1870 to go to St. Olaf township, Otter Tail County, Minnesota. They had five children. Knud became very active in the temperance movement, lecturing both in Norway and America. He was president of the National Temperance Association for several years. Read less
