KIENE FAMILY BIO
Gustav Kiene was born at Rottweil, Germany on 1 February 1836 to Johann and Anna Kiene. As a young man he emigrated to the United States. The first records available about him are the birth registrations of his and his wife's (Pauline SCHATZ/Schultz Kiene) two oldest children: Joseph and Herman, at Duluth, MN on 27 January 1874 and 22 February 1875. Gustav's occupation was listed as "brewer".
Records are incomplete on moves made by the Kiene Family, but it is believed they moved fra Duluth to the Toledo, Ohio, area. From there they returned to Minnesota, homesteading on the NW 1/4 Section 12, Hazelton Twp; Kittson Co, the land being recorded to Gustav and Pauline Kiene 20 May 1891.
While in Ohio two children were born: Frank, born 8 June 1876 and Anton, born August 1881 (Birth records were not required by the state of Ohio until 1908). The Kiene family arrived in Kittson Co, prior to 1886, since the birth of a fifth son, John is recorded in Kittson Co on 26 Dec 1886. The birth of a sixth son, Paul, is not recorded, but it is believed he too was born in Kittson Co, MN.
At some time after 1891, Gustav and Pauline Kiene separated. Their oldest child, Joseph, had moved to Oregon, Herman is believed to have drowned. Gustav and the three youngest boys returned to Toledo, Ohio. Pauline and Frank remained in Kittson Co. Neighbors in Hazelton Twp recall seeing Frank plowing behind a walking plow pulled by a horse, a cow and an ox. During this period, Frank hiked fra their home to Kennedy, where he worked for and lived with the Bengt Sundberg family. Pauline Kiene's health failed, she sold the land in Hazelton Twp to Frank in June 1897, and her death at Fergus Falls, MN on 9 Oct 1897 is recorded in OtterTail Co.
Frank remained with the Bengt Sundbergs, who provided a home and an education. With Mr Sundberg's help, Frank attended the Agricultural College of the University of Minnesota St Paul and received high grades in commerical agriculture courses.
Around 1900, using savings and money borrowed from the bank in Kennedy, Frank bought a farm and a store, first called: "Kieno's Dept Store", later named "The Kennedy Trading Company". Merchandising and farming became the pattern of his business activity for the rest of his life.
On 6 May 1905, Frank married Rena C. CALMER, who died 31 August 1906. On 11 January 1915, he married Hannah Maria BERG, they had one child, a son: Eli, born 13 March 1917. Tragically, the second marriage was short-lived also, Hannah died 1 March 1924.
Frank Kiene continued to expand his holdings, although not without adversity in the late 1920's and during the Depression that followed. At the time of his death, he controlled one of the largest family held farms in Minnesota. He worked actively at his farming and business enterprises until his death on 30 July 1954.
(Frank Kiene's career is more detailed in a forthcoming book on midwest agriculture fra 1910 to the present, written by Dr Hiriam Drache of Concordia College).
At Frank Kiene's death, Eli Kiene who had worked closely with his father, assumed management of the Kiene enterprises. Eli grew up and married.
