punkttegn  Forskningsnotater:

Death made its call Sunday on one of the oldest pioneer residents of the county, Henrik C. Hoff, resident of the East Tordenskjold area. He died at the Battle Lake Rest Home at 8:15 a.m. Sunday, after being a patient there since Friday afternoon.
Funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon, June 16, at 2 p.m. from the Trefoldighed Church, Rev. A. P. Nassen, officiating. Music will be provided by Mrs. James Franze, organist; Lyle and Robert Swedberg, duet; Yvonne Hoff, soloist, accompanied by Eunice Swedberg. Pallbearers will be Gordon, Roger, Herbert and Orin Holo, Marland and Howard Hoff. Burial will be in the Free Mission Cemetery in Tordenskjold Township.
Henrik Christian Hoff was born in Loitan, Hedemarken, Norway, September 18, 1860, the eldest son of Christian and Martha Skranstad Hoff. With his parents and two sisters, he immigrated to this country in 1870. Gena, a sister, remained in Norway with her grandparents.

The family boarded a sailing ship in Oslo and arrived in Quebec, Canada. They then traveled on a cattle train to the Great Lakes, where they took a steamboat and train to LaCrosse, Wis., and arrived July 2nd. When they got there, everyone was herded into shed-like barracks, and they realized they were in the United States when they witnessed their first 4th of July celebration.
The family then went to Houston, Minn., where they were met by Andreas (Tolief?) Hoff, later of Ashby, who took them by horse and wagon to Caledonia, where a place was found to live.
In 1883, he filed on a homestead near Fosston, and here, in 1886, he was united in marriage to Johanna Anderson also of Tordenskjold, but who lived on an adjoining homestead at Fosston. In 1894, Mr. and Mrs. Hoff and children returned to Otter Tail County, and bought a farm near Underwood, about 1905 they sold this farm and bought the Anderson farm (Mrs. Hoff's parents place) in East Tordenskjold, and they made their final home. Mr. and Mrs. Off were blessed with six children, one daughter, Mabel, dying in infancy.
Mrs. Hoff died in 1930, and in 1933, Henrik took as his wife, Mrs. Inga Adams of Los Angeles, Calif. She passed away in April, 1949.
A well-known man in this area, Mr. Hoff held many school and township offices. He was keenly interested in hunting and fishing, and kept the larder full of game. He shot his first deer at the age of 14, and in an open season in the county shot his last when 84. He owned his own car, and up to two years ago, drove himself. He was a faithful and loving husband and father, as well as a friend to all who had the good fortune to know him. This almost last of the pioneers will be sadly missed by everyone.

Left to mourn his passing are the children: Elmer of Underwood, Ella (Mrs. Ole Holo), Ruth (Mrs. Theo, Swedberg) both of Battle Lake, Pastor Arvey of Tacoma, Wash., and Raymond on the home farm. Also 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

We join with friends in extending sympathy.

Henry C. Hoff was born in Hedmarken, Norway, on September 18, 1860, the son of Christian and Martha (Skramstad) Hoff, both of whom were natives of Norway.
When Henry Hoff was ten years of age he came with his parents to America. They first settled at LaCrosse, Wisconsin, where they remained for a short time, then going to Houston County, Minnesota, and in 1872 came to Otter Tail County, Minnesota, where Christian Hoff took up homestead on one hundred and sixty acres of land in Tordenskjold Township.
The trip to Otter Tail County was made in a covered wagon, drawn by a team of oxen, and the time required to traverse the distance, which seems short in this day of rapid travel, was six weeks. Arriving in Tordenskjold they came to the home of Tollef Hoff, who had already settled on a homestead in the Northeastern part of the township, and remained at this place while a homestead was located.
Mr. and Mrs. Christain Hoff continued to live on their homestead farm in Tordenskjold for the rest of their lives.
Henrik Hoff and family left Christiania, (Oslo), Norway April 25, 1870 on the barq Columbia and arrived at Quebec June 20th. They were 270 passengers in steerage and one in cabin. One birth occurred on passage. All arrived well.
