Early life of Alice Larsen:
Her father was Frederick Alexander Almy. Fred was born 8/29/1872 in Honolulu, Hawaii, to English parents. When he was 10 years old, his family moved to Fresno, California. As a young man, he started one of the early restaurants that Fresno had.
Fred was adventurous. He became a seaman and sailed to Mexico and Central America. He spent several years managing plantations, first a pineapple plantation in Hawaii, and later on, he had a vanilla plantation in Tahiti. He also owned a store in Australia.
He married Helen Handley Mitchell, an Australian woman (born 12/25/1889). They had a son, Phillip Almy (died at 3 years old in 1902), a daughter Amy, and a daughter Alice. Helen was a nurse.

The Almy family lived in Papua, Tahiti where Alice Maara Almy was born (7/4/1914). Alice spoke French and English in her early years and spent time with other island children, enjoying the beach and outdoor life. Unfortunately, Helen died when Alice was 4 or 5 years old. Amy went back to Helen's family in Australia. As an adult, Amy moved to Southern California, married (last name Hulce). She kept in touch with Alice and they visited from time to time.
Fred took Alice back to Fresno. He began farming in the same area of Easton where the Larsen farm was. He remarried and Alice grew up on the farm with her younger half-sister Mary Almy Wetmore.
Fred died in Fresno (3/29/1948) of heart disease.
