Maxine S. Haugom, age 90, of Watertown, SD, passed away on October 10, 2009 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be on October 15, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. at the Wight, Comes & Sogn Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the Lorinda Cemetery, Henry, SD.
Maxine Sylvia Haugom was born on December 7,1918 to Sever and Sarah (Julson) Stadem at Watertown, South Dakota. She was the oldest of four children. The family moved to Henry, SD about 1924 and Maxine attended school in Henry and graduated from Henry High School in 1936. She then attended business college in Watertown.
On September 27, 1942 she married Alvin H. Haugom of Doland at Henry, South Dakota. The couple lived in Henry for a few years, both working for Maxine's father who owned the Henry Independent. They spent all their years in newspaper work at various locations before purchasing the Clarkfield Advocate of Minnesota in 1973. Maxine and Alvin retired to Lake Kampeska in 1983. Mr. Haugom passed away on February 17, 2002.
Maxine enjoyed being with her children and grandchildren. She had many hobbies, including crafts, painting, fishing, her flowers, crossword and Suduko puzzles. She was an excellent cook and was known for her homemade bread and and cinnamon rolls.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin; her brother, Gordon Stadem; and her sister, Shirley Wellington.
She is survived by her children, Doug (Bonnie) Haugom, Patty (Dick) Teeslink, Jim (Patty) Haugom and Nancy (Bernie) Roblewsky; 14 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one sister, Helen VanSickle; two sisters-in-law, Doris Luckhurst and Lois (Noel) Eng; and many nieces and nephews.
