Neal Allan Sieger, age 59, of Custer, SD, passed away unexpectedly November 1, 2011, at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD. Neal was born June 13, 1952, in Hot Springs to Helen (Dolphin) and Everett Sieger.
Everett was a WWII veteran who had returned to his pre-war job as an engineer with the South Dakota DOT. Everett was raised in Custer, and that is where he and Helen raised Neal and his younger brother Donal. Growing up in the 1960's, Neal lived the classic small town existence--sandlot baseball, nightly kick-the-can, football and basketball, often teaming up with his cousin, Bob Sieger. These were the times when houses were small and kids left in the morning and returned at night from who knows where, dirty and tired. Many days were spent with brother Don and cousins, Jean and Mary Ann Kingsbury, along with the family dog Pug, roaming the big rocks behind the Rock Crest Lodge in Custer.
Neal loved to play basketball and was a starting forward for the Custer Wildcats his junior and senior years. He graduated from CHS in 1970. He then gained admission to Chadron State College. Initially a Criminal Justice Major, Neal kept feeling an attraction to sports and education, ultimately graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Education, with a major in Social Studies from CSC.
Neal's entrepreneurial interests started with mowing lawns in the summer and delivering the Custer Chronicle. But the bug really bit him when he started working at the Rocky Knolls Golf Course. Greens Keeper, Course Manager, Clubhouse Manager, Bartender and Caterer were some of the hats he wore. Generous, free thinking, entrepreneurial, often stubborn but always friendly and fun loving, Neal wore many hats in his life; teacher, coach, small businessman, and friend to stray animals and people.
From the 1970's into the new century, Neal's second home was the "Knolls."
Neal touched countless lives while teaching and coaching at CHS from 1976-2011. He coached wrestling, basketball, football and golf, and was National Honor Society Advisor and Concession Manager.
Neal was awarded South Dakota's Boys Basketball Assistant Coach of the Year in 1989.He received South Dakota's Community Circle of Education Award for his research on the West Dam Project in 2007.
Neal retired after 35 years of service in the Custer School District. Throughout his 59 years in Custer, Neal was blessed with many wonderful friends, of which we are very grateful for their loving care and support.
Neal was preceded in death by his parents.
Neal is survived by his brother, Donal (Catherine) and his nephew Nicholas, all of Rapid City; and his special friend, Donita Kindt of Custer.
A memorial service will be held Friday, November 11, at the Custer Armory. In lieu of flowers, the family is establishing a scholarship at Custer High School in memory of Neal. Arrangements have been placed in the care of McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer
