Harold Haner: He’s seen it all.
Long time Douglas resident remembers city’s infancy
By STU MERRY
This weekend, the community of Douglas will celebrate its 100th birthd ay. There aren’t many people who were alive 100 years ago. Though no t a centenarian, one who has seen a good share of the past century i s Harold Haner.
The 93-year old was reared in the Douglas area and for many years, cal led the community home. Even though he has lived in Minot since 1967 , Harold carries a lot of memories, not only of his own life, but of t he life and history of Douglas.
Harold has seen numerous changes throughout the years. He’s seen trave l go from horse and buggy to cars; locomotives to modern day train . Old-style crank and "wired" phones have largely been replaced by wi reless technology. Yep, he's seen it all. He's "been there, done that. "
Harold was born on a farm northeast of Douglas near Nelson Carlson Lak e. He was one of seven children (four daughters and three sons born t o Warren and Anna Haner). He has two surviving siblings.
Anna was from Minnesota and Warren was from Iowa. The couple came to N orth Dakota to seek and homestead. Harold noted that his parents had b een unable to obtain a homestead claim when they lived in northeast So uth Dakota near White Rock and Wheaton.
According to Harold, when the Haner family arrived in North Dakota i n 1907, most of the land had already been taken. The couple received 8 0 acres to create a homestead near the newly established city of Dougl as. Early crops raised on the Haner homestead included flax and wheat .
Living a mere five miles away. Harold has been able to watch the cit y of Douglas evolve into a bustling young city and, in later year, int o a quiet rural community.
In the early years, even five miles seemed like a long distance. Trave l between the Haner homestead and town was by horseback or wagon.
Growing up, Harold said that the Haner family would make the trip to D ouglas once a week.
"It seemed Saturday was the time to take off and go to Douglas - somet imes it was late, but...
"On Saturday night, not much went on, but it was a get together, a pre tty good crowd in town on Saturday night. In the early years there wa s no liquor. Once a drinking establishment arrived, it turned into mo re than just Saturday night."
In its heyday, Harold said the population of Douglas had reached an im pressive 400 rear residents. That peak population came about 1930 whe n the city of Douglas was a bustling community. Harold spoke of the " glory day" of Douglas. He said there had been three grocery stores, tw o banks, two black-smith shops, five elevators and a stock yard.
"At that time then was a farm about every half section, some in ever y quarter, but that soon dwindled to larger farms,” Harold explained . There had been no trucks to transport goods or Livestock. The railro ad was the only way to get cattle, sheep or pigs to market.
Although Douglas and other rural communities had been thriving, thei r decline was about to begin. With the crash of the stock market, bank s closed in 1929. Harold was there. He lived it. He remembers it well.
"It was the turning point for Douglas," Harold said. 'When the banks c losed, more of the stores closed."
He noted that another factor in the decline of small towns, includin g Douglas, was when cars became more prevalent and better roads were e stablished.
“Travel became easier and people were more comfortable traveling,” Har old remembered. "To the south, those people went to Garrison: To the n orth, people gravitated to Minot."
In the Dirty 30’s Douglas area residents were like people in a lot o f other communities. They battled drought and economic woes.
Harold said. "They say now we haven't had any rain. They don't know wh at “no rain” is ... there was none in ‘31."
Harold recalled there was minimal crop in 1932-33 and that a year late r the drought took another hard swipe at rural North Dakota.
To earn a living, Harold had gone to Jamestown where he worked on roa d construction. In 1933, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. Th e CCC took him to job sites in Jamestown and Dickinson. In 1935, Haro ld went to work for a Douglas area farmer whose property was north o f the Haner homestead.
Then, in 1936, Harold found the love of his life; he met Anna Olsen , a teacher who would soon be his bride. He returned to his farming r oots and rented a farm in the Douglas area.
"Again, we didn't get any crop, but my wife said she would continue t o teach school, which she did, teaching north of Ryder " Harold said.
Harold recalled the honeymoon trip he and Anna had taken to Yellowston e National Park after their June 10, 1936 marriage. As he spoke, it wa s obvious the trip had been special. Written details of the trip, pen ned by Anna, look as fresh as if they were written yesterday.
"She was real good about writing down things," Harold said. The cost o f the trip was a whopping $19.01. Included in the cost was breakfas t for .31 cents. Groceries purchased at Williston, were $1.77. The co uple’s honeymoon expenses included treats, ice cream and gum .41 cents . A five gallon fill up of gas was $1.25. Another gas stop cost th e Haners $1.72 for seven gallons.
Harold and Anna lived on a farm near Douglas while they reared their s on Arden and their daughter Shirlene.
Although the farm provided an adequate income, Harold spoke of one tim e when life had appeared to be a little tougher. Anna had to tell the ir children that the bank had foreclosed and that the Haners had los t part of their farm.
"That was the school of hard knocks," Haner said.
Harold and Anna moved to Minot in 1967 and Anna passed away in 2000. A rden lives in Douglas and Shirlene (Haner) Johnson lives in West Farg o. Harold and Anna had been blessed with seven grandchildren and 16 gr eat grandchildren.
Reflecting on his home community, Harold noted that the community of D ouglas had changed with the times.
"And once the school closed in 1972, many businesses just quit. Now, w e have about 57 residents of Douglas," Harold said.
He's seen changes in people as well.
"Before we had public welfare, we had neighbors helping neighbors." H arold said. "I’m not sure it helped a lot as people became so dependen t that they wouldn't help themselves."
Over the years, ways of life have changed, some not necessarily good H arold said.
But he remembered with fondness when families took time to get togethe r, "loading up the sleigh and going to the neighbors to have homemad e ice cream, play cards and the kids would play."
The Douglas, native had not shied away from offering himself for commu nity service. The list of service positions he has held is long. Haro ld keeps that list and other mementos of sentimental value in his 'lif etime file."
From 1955-1967, he served as both Ward County commissioner and a s a member of the Ward County Park Board. He had been a member of Dou glas Farmers Elevator Company for almost a quarter of a century. Sin ce 1942, Harold has been a member of the IOOF and served as grand mas ter of District 14 for two Years. He has been a member of the Nort h Dakota County Commissioners Association and served on the AAA Commu nity Committee.
Harold is particularly proud of one of his accomplishments. With onl y an eighth-grade education, he had worked his way up to become direct or of tax equalization for Ward County.
