Long time Woodburn resident Tom Ostrom passed away Tuesday morning Ma y 3, 2007 at Maryville Nursing home in Beaverton , Oregon . He wa s 95 ½. Surviving: 6 of his children with 10 living and 2 deceased gr andchildren; 21 great grandchildren with one deceased; 2 brothers, Orr in Ostrom of Woodburn and Clinton Ostrom of Phoenix, Arizona. He wa s born 12-23-1911 at the family farm his father homesteaded in 1908 i n Douglas , ND . He was the second child of Anna Brekke and Oscar Ost rom. Tom's deceased siblings: Clifford of California, Julia Langfor d of Bismarck , ND ; Arvid Tilman, Verna Heer and Mabel Heer of Woodb urn , Oregon . His neighbor and his mother's sister Christine Brekk e was his midwife. Tom spent his early years farming and married a n eighbor Alice Emerson on 5-20-1931 . Tom is survived by 6 of hi s 7 children. Son Derwin died as a child. Daughters Sharon King, Wood burn, Dolly Murphy, Keizer, OR, Janice Vail, Ojai, Ca; Elwood, Beavert on, OR, were born on the farm in ND. Edwin of Portland and DoraAnn o f Beaverton were born in Woodburn. In May of 1942 Tom and family lef t North Dakota and moved to Woodburn , Oregon where his parents, hi s siblings and many of his cousins had previously relocated.
They lived next to his parents who left Douglas in 1939 and establish ed a farm on Carl Road in Woodburn.
Tom had a varied working career as farmer and cattle rancher in ND. I n Oregon with Kaiser shipyards in Portland , Oregon , Sowa's machine s hop in Woodburn, a volunteer fireman for 7 years, part time on the pol ice force for 2 years, and after retiring as a maintenance superviso r of the Woodburn school district in 1980, farmed and practiced his li fe long passion of raising cattle with Steve Coleman of St. Paul, Oreg on. Tom was active for many years with the OSEA (Oregon School Employ ees Association) and served as president in 1970. He was also a boar d member of the city of Woodburn Parks and recreation department.
Tom was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, beginning at Sprin g Lake and Trinity Lutheran in Douglas , ND and then Immanuel Luthera n in Woodburn , Oregon .
