SALEM - Sally Jo Nims was born June 4, 1949 to Cecil and Mona Nims, i n Tillamook, Oregon. She died on Nov. 16, 2016 at Salem Hospital afte r a lengthy, hard fought battle with renal failure.
She is survived by her sister, Jan Nims, of Prineville, Oregon, a neph ew, Scott Miller of Vancouver, Washington, and a niece, Becca Miller , of Salem, Oregon. She is also survived by a very special cousin, Dav id McFarland and his wife Jerie Ann who looked after Sally during th e time she lived with and cared for his mother, Margaret McFarland unt il her death in 2015. David and Jerie Ann continued to be an importan t part of her life. Her parents and a sister, Joanna Nims, predecease d her.
Sally attended Oregon College of Education graduating with a Bachelors ' of Science in Education. Shortly thereafter she joined the Peace Cor p and was stationed in Florida. While there, she taught underprivilege d children. After serving her Country, Sally traveled to Japan partici pating in a teaching exchange program.
Although Sally did not have children of her own, she enjoyed a life su rrounded by children, teaching and mentoring each child to succeed a s they moved forward with their educational pursuits. Sally was an avi d (sometimes rabid) Portland Winter Hawks fan and often went on road t rips to Canada taking her niece and nephew. She also enjoyed trips t o the Oregon Coast with her niece Becca and dog Zoee.
She belonged to the Salem Fruitland Evangelical Church. Sally deeply a ppreciated guidance and support from Pastor Ken Baker and friends Marl ene and Dusty Rhoades.
There will be no Memorial Service per her request. In Sally's memory , donations can be made to Willamette Valley Humane Society (503-585-5 900). Assisting is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
