Charles Gustafson, 88, of Battle Lake died Saturday, May 9, 2009 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls.
Charles Arthur Gustafson was born on Nov. 17, 1920, in Revere, Minn., the son of Charlie Alfred and Elsie F. (Retimer) Gustafson. He was baptized in the Lutheran Faith and grew up in various places across southern Minnesota where he attended school. He was confirmed in Gary, S.D.
He was employed at Red Owl Store in Brookings, S.D., and then worked on various farms. Charles served with the U.S. Army, entering Nov. 17, 1944, during World War II, serving with the 1285th Combat Engineers which was attached to the 4th Army. On April 15, 1945, he was sent to Germany. While there he was close enough to hear the battles when the Germans surrendered.
They then went to France and crated their equipment, then headed for CBI (China-Burma-India). The third day out at sea, orders were changed, the war was over and they sailed for New York. He was discharged on Dec. 30, 1945, when he moved to Tordensjold Township.
Charles and Corinne F. Hardie were married on June 26, 1950, in Park Rapids. After their marriage they farmed in Girard Township for 14 years, then moved into Battle Lake where Charles was employed with Consumers Oil Company for 37 years until his retirement in 1982. He then worked part time for Vern Charest and drove truck during the concrete season for Ahlfs Ready Mix for three years.
He enjoyed taking care of his lawn and garden, his coffee breaks with his friends and was an active member in the community. He will be remembered for his woodworking and helping people.
Charles was a member of the First Lutheran Church where he served on several boards and held offices, the Battle Lake Senior Citizens, Battle Lake Lions Club, American Legion, VFW and the Fergus Falls Chapter 25 DAV.
Charles is survived by his wife, Corinne; two sisters, Merlain Burlingame of Canby, Minn., and Rosann Richter of Harrisonville, Mo.; along with 23 nieces and nephews, and several great-nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters: Alice Lehman, Doris Benson and Mildred Buyuse.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Battle Lake Lions Club and the Minnesota Veterans Home.
