TRIBUTE TO WHITLA PIONEERS printed in 1969 page 102 THE TIM DAVIS FAMILY by Martha (Davis) Chandler
My dad was born in the USA in the State of Maine.
My mother, Dortilda Waall, was born in Sweden, but left her homeland and came to America. It was in Montevido, Minnesota where my mother and father were married. They farmed that area for many years, during which time they had eight children, 6 girls and 2 boys. Upon hearing of the great fortunes to be made in Canada, dad came up in 1909, or early 1910, and filed on a homestead, the SE 1/4 20-12-8-4, close to the South Saskatchewan river. Towards fall of that year we left Minnesota, with a team hooked to a covered wagon, heading for Whitla, Alberta some 700 or 800 miles away. Well, after many days and many miles, we finally got to Canada. By this time it was getting into October and getting colder, so somewhere south of Moose Jaw my Mother and six of the little ones took the train the rest of the way. My sister Mary and I stayed with dad and the wagon and made the entire trip. Something I'll never forget.
When we did arrive it was too late and cold to build anything to live in so we spent the first winter with the Moger family. The next year we built a fair sized house, but quite different than most. It was dug into the side of a coulee, the front being two stories high and the rear just one storey.
Dad farmed this land and at the same time fed and clothed a large family. It must have been a tremendous task. Two more children were born here. Lloyd, a boy, died at 15 months in 1913 and a sister Florence, died in 1915-16 when very young.
Dad died in 19a7, it was during the war and I was in England at the time. My mother stayed on the homestead with the family. When John Clausen moved away they lived on his place a short while. Then about 1923, mother, with Peral and Bert, moved to Olympia, Washington, where she resided until her passing in 1959 in her 83rd year.
The rest of the family that made that long trek are still living. Mabel in Graceville, Minnestota. Emma in Orane Cove, California. Mary, Julia, Bert and Pearl in Olympia, Washington. Joe lives in Calgary. Martha married Bill Chandler. He served in the First WW overseas and our three sons served in the SEcond WAr. My husband passed away in 1959 and one son died three years ago. I live by myself in Medicine Hat and have worked in the Steam Laundry more years than I care to remember, and still work there. There is talk of the laundry closing down, so maybe my working days will be over and I can take a much needed rest.
