Hello, I have had some luck on Ancestry in getting information about Grandpa Larsen.
Lars Christian Larsen was born on February 11, 1876 in Apelrade, Germany. He emigrated to the United States from Hamburg, Germany on the ship the Pretoria. It left Germany on 2nd September 1905 and arrived in New York (Ellis Island) on 20th September 1905. Lars, who went by Chris, married Annie on February 22, 1911. On 18th March, 1912, he signed his Declaration of Intent to become a Naturalized Citizen of the United States of America. He gained his citizenship on 19th March, 1914. Chris died on October 4, 1929 from complications after surgery. Love to all, Renella and Greg
Hello Poul and Herdis, Yes, Chris was Danish. I do not know the name of the town he came from. I know that it was near the German border because, as a young man, he was conscripted into the German army. He was later released from the army and returned home. Soon he heard that the Germans were coming back to take the men into their army again.
Chris decided to immigrate to American to avoid the Germans. I don't know much about how he got to California, but I do know that he ended up in Claifornia, working as a lumberjack at the mill. He met Annie when she was also at the mill to cook for the men.
They eventually married and bought the farm in Fresno (near Eston that we visited), where Ella and Lloyd were born.
I was told that Chris became sick on the farm - probably from undiagnosed diabetes. He was taken to a hospital, but enetered a diabetic coma and did not recover. Annie had to sell the farm and that is when she bought the house in Fresno on McKenzie Ave.
She returned to work as a maid. Ella and Lloyd were teenagers. They attended the same high school as Alice. They were responsible to cook and clean at home because Annie worked long hours for other families.
I will look for pictures of my mother and write you about her in a separate message.
My parents were cremated according to their wishes. Their ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean. They loved visiting Monterey and other coastal areas, so they wished to have their ashes comitted to the ocean.
Best wishes, Marjorie
