[portion of an email message from Mary Rabenberg sent Aug 22, 2013 ] -- I will begin responding to your questions. I too have been conf used by his exact birthdate. In every public document I have seen the re have been several different years given. The 1880 census record sh ows 1872 as the year of birth. I also found the following on Familyse arch which I believe would be definitive which indicates 3 June 1872 : https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X6DK-TJ7 I also have a cop y of John Henry's death certificate that Mark Ehlers (Arnold's son) s ent me. I am sorry I was remiss in not sending you a copy of it. I wi ll attach it for you. Note his death certificate says he was born Jun e 3, 1875. (Jerry's death info may be a typo or a misreading of handw ritten data). The other confusion that has mystified me is when in 19 20 and 1930 the census shows that John was born in "South Colrina" wh en we know he was born in Ohio. This later is transcribed in Heritag e Quest index as South Carolina. In the 1930 census for my grandfathe r Oscar Ehlers South Colrina is also shown as his father's birthplace . (I wonder if John Henry Ehlers was trying to hide something or fro m someone). I know if it hadn't been for a letter that my aunt Viole t had written to my mother a long time ago that indicated the famil y came originally from Ohio, I may have have run into a brick wall wi th the misinformation that shows up in the censuses records. 3. [Portion of email message sent to Mary Rabenberg on August 24, 2013 ] -- Thank you for the reply. It is gratifying to see that you too ar e confused about J.H.'s birth and death dates. I double-checked th e Douglas History Book and I had transcribed it correctly... South Colrina is truly a mystery. When I google it I get nothing bu t South Carolina results. It does not appear to be a ghost town eithe r as I tried that search. I think I am going to use for birth: 3 Jun 1872 Reason: 1880 census and Ohio Birth Index concur. The 1880 Census is p robably the most accurate. Parents gave that information to the enume rator and closest to the actual birth. And for his death: 7 Jan 1934 Reason: That date matches the death certificate. 4. 3 Jun 1876 - This date was found in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery L ist and WWI Draft Reg Card; only referenced here to recall this date w hen seen in the future.
