He was raised and educated in Sabin, Minnesota. Rich was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps for four years from 1940 to 1945 in the Pacific area during World War II. Rich was united in marriage to Violet Ehlers on December 21, 1946, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. They moved to Barrett in the spring of 1947. Rich owned and operated his automotive garage in Barrett for over 40 years. He also worked for Central Steel, Bethlehem Steel, Kaiser Steel, and Johnson Brothers Construction in the capacity of mechanical engineer throughout the years. Rich was a member of the Barrett Legion for over 40 years and had served many years as a member of the Barrett Fire Department and as Fire Chief. He also belonged to the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 49. Rich enjoyed with his family many activities such as golfing, fishing, traveling, and attending his grandchildrens' athletic games. He was always kept busy, responding to calls for help from friends, family and neighbors. Rich is survived by his wife, Violet, of Barrett, MN; one daughter, Jana Tonsfeldt, and two granddaughters, Teressa and Jessica Tonsfeldt, all of Louisburg, MN; one sister, Delta Meech and husband Donald, of Sebeka, MN; two brothers, Wayne and wife Becky Tonsfeldt, of Comstock, MN; and Doyle and wife Gerry Tonsfeldt, of Sabin, MN; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Richard, two brothers, and one sister.
