Excerpt from Susie Paulson interview with Olena Paulson in sprin g 1934 provided by Ed Ostrom. Lena Paulson married Olaus Ommundson Os trom on September 19, 1873. They lived in Waseca County six or seve n years, bought land there and then sold it again and decided to leav e there and get a homestead. They left there with six children in a c overed wagon. They started out in May and got here in August. They b ought one cow on the way for milk. Had two horses when they arrived h ere, and one sack of flour, and $18.00 in cash. They stayed in Fergu s Falls for three weeks. Then built a shanty on the ground with no fl oor, windows or doors. They lived that way until September, then pu t in a floor. Olaus Ostrom worked for Schaffer's stacking grain so a s to get money to live. Their children were Ole Anders, Johan Gabrial , Anna Aolani, Elsie Curina, Theodore, Olena (these were born in Wasec a County). They had Oscar, Gunhild, Paul Bertil and Carl Johan here i s Grant county. (John Paulson, born on December 8, 1841, died March 25 , 1921. Brother to Paul & Lena.) "Obituary - OLE OSTROM - Ole Ostrom , a resident of Grant county for the last forty-two years died at th e home of his daughter, Mrs. W. Nims in Elbow Lake last Thursday, Jul y 17. Mr. Ostrom has suffered from paralysis for the past two years. O le Ostrom was born at Stavanger, Norway, September 30, 1850. He cam e to this country in 1871, living first at Waseca, Minn. There he wa s married to Tolina G. Paulson, September 19, 1873. In 1882 they move d to Grant county where they made their home on a farm about three an d one-half miles north of Elbow Lake until last October. Since Octobe r, 1923, Mr. Ostrom has lived at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nims . Mr. Ostrom is survived by his wife, and five sons and three daughter s: John Ostrom, Drumhiller, Alberta, Can., Mrs. Anna Haner, Douglas, N . D., Mrs. Elsie Nims, Elbow Lake, Theodore Ostrom, Drake, N.D, Osca r Ostrom, Douglas, N.D., Mrs. Olina Ehelers, Douglas, N.D., P. B. Ostr om, Elbow Lake, and Carl J. Ostrom, Empress, Alberta, Can. He also ha s a brother living in Norway. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon fr om the Ness Lutheran church of which Mr. Ostrom was a member. Rev. O . G. AAsen conducted the services. Internment was made made in the Ne ss cemetery. The pallbearers were Albert Scheaffer, H. Setran, H. Jeb e, J. Craft, G.I. Island and Ole Pikop." 2.
