TRIBUTE TO WHITLA PIONEERS printed in 1969 Page 109 JAMES (GRAND-DAD) SMITH by C.F. Smith
My grandparents, James & Harriet Smith's birthplace is not known, but they lived and farmed near Mount Pleasant, Ontario. It was there that their four children grew up. In the early 1900s they moved west to a farm near Banrty, North Dakota. Their oldest child, Ada, was married there, she never came to Canada.
In 1908 all the grazing leases were cancelled in this area and the land was thrown open for homesteading. In Dec of 1908, my Dad, Fred Smith, came up and filed on two claims SE 1/4 27-11-8-4 for himself and NW 1/4 27-11-8-4 for his Dad. In 1909, early, they shipped all they owned, whch wasn't very much to farm both places.
My grandparents weren't with them long, they were both nearly sixty years old when they came. They were here about two years when Grandmother suffered a stroke, she recovered but never walked again. In 1912 Grand-dad was stricken and taken to the Medicine Hat Hospital, he passed away there and she passed away at home, two weeks apart, one not knowing the other had gone.
When my grandparents moved to this area they brought their two youngest children with them. Uncle Les and Aunt Bertha were both single and when my grandparents died they got the homestead.
In 1912-13 Less married Emma Davis, whose folks had settled along the river. When Less had someone to do the cooking Bertha went back to the States and stayed.
They lived there for 10 years of drought and hard times. Less was good-natured and easy-going but Emma was the driving force. .....
They had two children; Helen & Howard.
In 1923 they moved to California.
