Forskningsnotater:
Born March 11, 1885 in Wakefield Township, Minnesota, Susanna Theresa Nierenhausen was the 10th of 11 children born to Peter and Margareth Nierenhausen, Luxembourg immigrants who had originally settled in Sheldon, NY in the mid-1840s.
After growing up on the family farm in Minnesota, Susan left for Minot, North Dakota where she was a seamstress working for one of her brothers. In North Dakota she met Fred Smith, whom she married on February 5, 1905 in Fargo. They had two sons in North Dakota: Ralph in 1906 and Stanley in 1908.
With the promise of free land in what was now Alberta, Canada, Fred, Susan and the family packed up and moved to Winnifred, before settling in a quarter section of land outside of Whitla, Alberta. There, they had two more boys: Cecil in 1915 and Verner in 1919. Fred passed away in 1922, and Susan and the boys maintained the farm until eventually everyone other than Cecil moved away.
Susan relocated in Medicine Hat where she lived the remainder of her life, passing away on April 24, 1978. She is buried in Hillside Cemetery.
