1.) Twin of Albert. Nickname was "Lefty" as he was left-handed and cou ld throw a "mean" baseball. Other notes on old papers say "ARMY" th e 37 and 45. Military papers that his son Lloyd has states Alfred ha d blue eyes, brown hair and was 5ft 7inches tall. He served in Franc e during WWI, serving from September 18, 1917 until June 6, 1921. Fo r his service he received a Victory Medal. The 1930 census finds Alfre d and Olena living in Douglas, North Dakota, where Alfred is employe d as a school janitor. Soon they pack up the family's belongings an d head for Washington state. Eventually many in his family make the s ame move: his parents, and three brothers, Knute, Henry and Hans and s ister Louise. Originally Alfred's death date was recorded as July 31 , 1931. Daughter, Gloria (Johnson) Moreno corrected his death date t o May 29, 1931. She went on to say that he died of spinal meningitis w hile at Swedish Hospital. The family was living in White Center. Hi s death certificate confirmed this. Actual family residence at time o f death, 9418 - 14th Ave S.W., Seattle. They had lived at this addres s for only 2 months before his death. His father, William Johnson wa s the informant on his death certificate, what a difficult thing fo r a father to do. There was a family myth told that Alfred had died sh ortly after a steel tub bath, where letting his children splash him h e got water in his ear, causing his ear to become infected and going i nto his mastoid bone. The death certificate adds as a contributory ca use, but not related to his death was "Chronic Otitis Media". His cau se of death was Spinal Meningitis. According to the University of Mar yland Medical Center's web site: Chronic Otitis Media (COM) is the ter m used to describe a variety of signs, symptoms, and physical finding s that result from the long-term damage to the middle ear by infectio n an inflammation. http://www.umm.edu/otolaryngology/ear_infections.ht m. So he had been troubled with an ear infection for a very long time . A report from Dave Johnson, grandson to Knute L. Johnson, from the n otes of an interview he had with his parents K Lawrence and Lorraine J ohnson, "Alfred died at the age of 37 from a meningitis problem, blame d on the injury behind his ear caused by a jack hitting him at age 1 7 while working on a railroad track." No matter the cause, I think th e truth is that he became sick with spinal meningitis shortly afte r a quiet evening at home that included playtime with his children an d a relaxing bath. Perhaps he woke up sick sometime during the night.

2. The pocket watch's provenance: originally owned by Alfred M. Johnso n, then sometime after his death it was passed to his oldest son, Lloy d Donald Johnson, then passed to his oldest son Gregg D. Johnson ha d the watch repaired and cleaned. It was Gregg who brought the watc h to his mother's 90th birthday party where I had a chance to hold an d photograph this same watch.

3. Alfred claimed that he was born in 1894. Several records show thi s claim. But he was born in Dec, 1893. There is a SD birth record fo r his sister Louise that shows her birth in Dec 1894.

4. I recall his middle name being told to me as MEER-um. But seeing hi s death certificate I have set up his entry on this tree to Mar-em, so unds like MARE-um.
